Registration for the 2026-2027 season is now CLOSED.

The Chapel Hill Cheetahs cross country team is open to boys and girls, ages 10 and up, who are part of a registered homeschool. Runners are not required to be Deerstream students. Students ages 10 through middle school compete in a 2 mile race, while high school students compete in a 5K (3.1 miles) race.

In order to participate on the cross country team, runners must be 10 years old by September 1, 2026 and must be able to run 1 mile under 12 minutes. The Time Trial requirement is not meant to be discouraging, but rather to ensure the safety of the runners. Many new runners may not be able to run a mile yet, but if they get out and start running now, they will make great progress over the next few months. The goals of cross country are to challenge yourself to improve and to encourage your teammates!

Summer Cross Country Practices will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 8-9:15 AM and Thursdays from 4:30-6 beginning on Monday, July 13 at Blackwood Farm Park (4215 NC-86, Chapel Hill, NC 27514). This park has a nice playground area, plenty of shade, and restrooms, so it’s a pleasant place for parents and siblings to wait while the team practices. Every other Thursday, practice may be held at a track located in Chapel Hill.

Runners should come to as many practices as they can, and Coaches Williamson and McCall will provide them with workouts to do on off days. At the same time, we know folks will be in and out of town for vacations, and that’s just fine!

Fall Cross Country Practices: Beginning when Deerstream opens on Monday, August 31 , students will practice Mondays and Wednesdays, 7:45-8:45 AM at the Chapel Hill Bible Church and Thursdays from 4:30-6 at a park or local tracks. Deerstream students can bring a towel and a change of clothes and will have time to cool down and change before classes begin.

Meets are held from August through October against other area teams. The season concludes with the NCHE State meet in early October in Greensboro.

  • The cost to participate for the season is $200 for all students, which includes the use of a uniform.
  • Runners will need a medical form signed by a doctor to participate.
  • In addition, please print, sign and turn in the Liability Release Form, the Non-recruit form and the Concussion Awareness form.
